So Who Then Directs Worship ?
Who directs the worship that happens in a church, congregation, meeting or nay gathering that people have to seek the face of the Lord is it the pastor, the deacons, the board or the worship leader. This is the biggest question that has and is still causing church infighting, splits and has caused churches in the past to split and it is such a delicate matter that we need divine guidance to work on it.
The devil is set to destroy the institution of the church and if he can distort your worship He would have won that battle.
The first and most important thing about worship in a corporate setting is that if SUBMISSION is absent things will fall into chaos and cause dissension. If we don’t submit to each other, leader to leader, singers to pastors, deacons to church boards and then to Christ and to the Holy Spirit we are headed for disaster. Wherever the Spirit of God is there is order and not chaos and whenever everyone is in alignment, the Holy Spirit easily directs the worship.
The Holy Spirit flows like a river and where the deacon board, worship leader, choir is in submission to each other and the pastor is in submission to God worship will become tangible and concrete. Where you find a question, who directs worship arising a lot I will tell you that there is no submission. When we all flow in this river where the worship leader stops the next person or the pastor can take us to a next level.
Exodus 13:21-22 “And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead them along the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, that they might travel by day and by night. The pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night did not depart from before the people”.
“And when the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle, the children of Israel went onward in all their journeys: But if the cloud were not taken up, then they journeyed not till the day that it was taken up. For the cloud of the LORD was upon the tabernacle by day, and fire was on it by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel, throughout all their journeys”, Exodus 40:36-38
Looking at the account of Israel in the wilderness you will realise that Israel had Moses, Aaron, Priest, Levites, leaders of tribes, elders and a 3 million congregation. Like today’s church we have pastors, deacons, council boards, worship leaders and other people involved in the church. It was the synergy between all these parties that allowed the Spirit of God to direct their lives. Moses or the Levites did not bulldoze anything because the Holy Spirit directed everything and it’s in such a place that God does more in people’s lives.
The cloud by day and fire by night allowed and reminded them of the presence of God and his spirit in directing and guiding not only their worship but also their lives. They were not fighting with the spirit trying to cast it out of their midst but it was their submission and obedience that made the difference not just individually but also corporately.

I believe that the pastor is the chief worship leader of any church and singers and musicians should be in alignment with the pastor, as he in alignment with God. As I say this some ears are popping asking the question what if the Pastor is not in alignment with the spirit and I am, simple the pastor is the father of the house he was the called one. If God wanted you he would have called you there. It’s hard but learn to submit and obey even if it looks otherwise and if not pray for your pastor but no matter what submit.
If we can’t submit to earthy authority what makes you think you can submit to the Holy Spirit. So who directs worship? The Holy Spirit is the answer and us as worship leaders and pastors need to jump into the river of the flowing waters of the Holy Spirit and carry the congregations with us. The important part we are called to for the people, if we can’t connect with that God can circumvent and still touch his people without you.
Our job as the called ones whatever place you are at, is to bring people to his feet not ours so let everything you do bring people to his feet. The Holy Spirit flows like a river and he directs worship and all we have to do is to follow the Spirit.
