Why We Shout For Joy or Offer A Joyful Noise..




To utter a sudden and loud outcry, usually in joy, triumph or exultation, A loud burst of voice or voices

Shout and Joyful Noise come from the same Hebrew root word which is “Rua” and it means


  • to shout
  • figuratively means to split the ears (with sound)
  • raise a sound or blow an alarm
  • a cry out, give a blast


Shouting or a Joyful Noise is not a timid whisper, I’m shouting in my heart. It’s an explosive joyful noise to God! It goes beyond a small voice or loud voice it’s actually loud for a reason.

The meaning for a shout and also for a joyful noise are the same that I feel they can be used interchangeably.

Shouting was used to mean singing aloud and also to express victory in the bible like when the walls of Jericho. Shouting is also used to express a sudden joy and happiness it was used alarm or danger and this was later replaced with a trumpets and warning drums. One other use it was used for was a cry for help to the Lord.

 “When the ark of the LORD's covenant came into the camp, all Israel raised such a great shout that the ground shook”. I Samuel 4:5

“Sing to him a new song; play skillfully, and shout for joy” Psalm 33:3

“Shout aloud and sing for joy, people of Zion, for great is the Holy One of  Israel among you." Isaiah 12:6

“O clap your hands, all ye people; shout unto God with the voice of triumph” Psalms 47:1 

Thus all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the LORD with shouting, and with sound of the cornet, and with trumpets, and with cymbals, making a noise with psalteries and harps”. 1Chronicles 15:28

“God is gone up with a shout, the LORD with the sound of a trumpet”. Psalms 47:5

“I will also clothe her priests with salvation: and her saints shall shout aloud for joy”. Psalms 132:16

“Let thy priests be clothed with righteousness; and let thy saints shout for joy”, Psalms 132:9

“Be glad in the LORD, and rejoice, ye righteous: and shout for joy, all ye that are upright in heart”. Psalms 32:11

“A Psalm of praise. Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands”. Psalms  100:1 

Sing aloud unto God our strength: make a joyful noise unto the God of Jacob”. Psalms 81:1

Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms”. Psalms 95:2

“With trumpets and sound of cornet make a joyful noise before the LORD, the King”. Psalms 98:6


Shout For Joy

The term shout for joy comes from a the Hebrew word “Ranan” which basically means
  •  properly to creak or emit a stridulous sound
  • to shout  aloud for joy,
  • cry out

“Let them shout for joy, and be glad, that favour my righteous cause: yea, let them say continually, Let the LORD be magnified, which hath pleasure in the prosperity of his servant”. Psalms 35:27

“The pastures are clothed with flocks; the valleys also are covered over with corn; they shout for joy, they also sing”. Psalms 65:13

“Let thy priests be clothed with righteousness; and let thy saints shout for joy”. Psalms 132:9

The Question the Church is fighting today is that is Shout and Joyful Noise a thing for the Modern Church? After reading all these commands I hope you have an answer to your question.
