Why Brokenness. Part 1
Brokenness is a pivotal part of a worshipper lifestyle and that is one thing that separates worshippers apart. To break simply means to destroy, shatter into pieces. Brokenness also speaks about humility and a repentant heart and lifestyle
“Whosoever shall fall upon that stone shall be broken; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder”, Luke 20:18. This verse for me embodies brokenness and it explains the life of a worshipper. By reading this we see that brokenness is a choice we have in life either we allow God to fall upon us or we fall upon the rock and this explains a question that I was asked. “When it comes to being broken before the Lord, which is best: asking the Lord to break us or breaking ourselves before the Lord. Do we either ask God to break us or we choose to break us?
A crushed heart is a fragrant heart, have you ever been in a church where the Pastor or Worship leader are just broken people, there is just a sweet tangible Spirit of God in that place. When you get to sit down with such people you will realise that though they may not have prayed such kind of prayers but God broke them nevertheless in his own ways.
Brokenness blesses God more than the sacrificial blood of animals“For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise. Psalms 51:16-17. Scripture reveals that there is brokenness is of the heart and of the Spirit.
God isn’t pleased with the either the sporadic or constant offering of animals but he is pleased by brokenness because brokenness is a constant sacrifice, it’s a continual offering before God.
The only way for God’s character, heart and mind to be evident in our lives, there has to be a breaking for that displacement to happen. God’s way of building is down and not up so when God says he is building he is digging and breaking the old foundation so that he may start building a new one where he can only be supreme. So when we start to pray for the heart, mind and character of God, He initiates the breaking process so that he may do beyond us and beyond our capacity.
The day you received Christ as your personal Lord and saviour you had speak it or in other words you had to confess him just as Romans 10:9 “ That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus” and when we do so we do out of our free will not forced. If you have seen that the principle in God’s kingdom starts by asking basically, it’s important that we ask God to break us because it gives him access to work in our lives, He cannot move where He is not welcome.
So it is important for us to ask God to break us, when God first taught me about this I prayed asked this kind of prayer “God break me and even if it means humiliating me in public for me to learn the truth about this what’s important is you break me” that was crazy I was extreme but I didn’t care all I wanted was to be broken. God started to show me that humiliation is not his part but brokenness, he will not humiliate me to break me but he will work me in private.
Today I was reading about one of God’s Generals John Evans a Welsh Revivalist who lived at the start of the century, he had a prayer he was well known for was God which was, “God bend me bend me to your will”. He constantly prayed such a prayer and I learnt that brokenness is not a destination but a continuous journey.
In the next issue we shall finish the last part of the answer how do we break ourselves.
“Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name; Worship The LORD In The Beauty Of Holiness”, Psalms 29:2
